Join the St. Jude Give thanks. Walk.
On Saturday, November 17, 2012, join WAMZ and participate in the St. Jude Give Thanks Walk, an exciting, family-friendly walk to raise money for the children of St. Jude. In 2011, more than 33,000 walkers participated in 78 events nationwide, collectively raising more than $3.2 million.
Locally, more than 600 St. Jude supporters attended the 2011 event in Louisville, which raised more than $95,000. WAMZ is excited to serve as the official media partner for the 2012 event, which will be held at The Louisvilel Zoo. With your help, we hope to attract more than 1,000 walkers to participate and raise $125,000 through our local event to help support the global mission of St. Jude.
Why support St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital?
St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, founded by the late entertainer Danny Thomas in 1962, is one of the world’s premier centers for the research and treatment of pediatric cancer and other deadly childhood diseases.
St. Jude is changing the way the world treats childhood cancer. For example, in 1962, the survival rate for acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), the most common form of childhood cancer, was 4 percent. Today, the survival rate for this once deadly disease is 94 percent, thanks to research and treatment protocols developed at St. Jude.
Children from our Louisville community, all 50 states, and from around the world have come through the doors of St. Jude for treatment, and thousands more around the world have benefited from the research conducted at St. Jude — research that is shared freely with the global medical community.
No family ever pays St. Jude for anything.
St. Jude Give thanks. Walk. and Thanks and Giving
The St. Jude Give thanks. Walk. serves as the official kick-off event for the St. Jude Thanks and Giving fundraising and awareness campaign. The St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign is an unprecedented union of celebrities, media, retail and corporate partners that asks consumers to “Give thanks for the healthy kids in your life, and give to those who are not.”
The St. Jude Thanks and Giving campaign was created in 2004 by Marlo Thomas and her siblings Terre and Tony Thomas, children of hospital founder Danny Thomas. Funds raised by the campaign support the lifesaving work of St. Jude – to find cures for children with cancer and other catastrophic diseases through research and treatment.
